WHAT IS ORTON GILLINGHAM?
A Look Inside the Comprehensive Reading Approach
Orton Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach to teach reading that began with dyslexic learners and has now been implemented by educators with all learners. It relies on directly teaching the fundamental structure of language, moving from simple to complex concepts. Each five-part lesson is presented to students using their visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning pathways.
PARTS OF AN ORTON GILLINGHAM LESSON
The ability to hear, manipulate, and recognize sounds in words, parts of words, and sentences.
The ability to correlate sounds with letters or groups of letters. In other words, matching the sounds to print.
This is the set of familiar words within a person's language. The broader a person's vocabulary, the more they can relate to the material being presented.
The ability to speak and read smoothly and accurately with appropriate expression.
The ability to understand what is being spoken or read from a text.
HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS
High frequency are commonly used words in print and speech. Sight words are words that are instantly recognized without having to decode them.
