Knowledge is power!
Check out our 5-Step Ready to Read Roadmap to determine where your child is on their literacy journey.
STEP 1: MASTER LETTERS
The first step to being ready to read is to build a strong foundation with letters and phonemic awareness. Your child will master all parts of a letter including names, sounds and writing.
STEP 2: BUILD WORDS
After letters are mastered and your child can break words into sounds and put sounds together to make words, they are now ready to build simple words such as man, Beth, ship, box, and cut
STEP 3: READ SENTENCES
Your child can now easily read and spell simple words and is moving into more advanced phonics skills (reading and spelling words such as blend, shrimp, flute, camped and drink) and putting words together to read and write full sentences.
STEP 4: LONGER WORDS
This is getting exciting! Your child is now becoming more fluent with simple sentences and more and more words. They are now ready to move to longer words with multiple syllables (reading and spelling words such as farmer, clicked, jungle, lighting, burner, and boiler). Their fluency and comprehension are also improving!
STEP 5: CHALLENGE WORDS
This step is one of the most important in becoming an independent learner. By growing skills with advanced phonics (such as schwa, broad a, y as a vowel, and consonants with multiple sounds) and morphology (ex., prefixes, and suffixes), your child can decode and learn new words at a rapid pace. They are now ready to be independent learners who are reading to learn!
Maybe you think you know what step your child is on or maybe you have no clue!
